So I havn't written in awhile, again. It seems like this holiday season got the best of me. I was so busy I completly forgot about all the things i needed to get done :). But this is a new year, and I made so new resolutions!

2. Keep you up to date on our financial goals this year!
3. Pay off all our Credit Cards
4. Stick to my budget every week
5. Put $100 a month into an account to start a downpayment for our first house!

Having trouble finding enough money to pay for gifts whis year, especially in this economy? One of the nice things about having a budget is you can start planning these expenses you know are comming around. Christmas, birthdays, car maintnance, taxes....the list goes on.

2009 is fast approaching,why not start you budget for this next year. Instead of searching for $1,000 around the holiday season, why not have a christmas catagory in your budget. I would imagine it would be a whole lot easier finding 1/12 of $1,000 instead of finding it all at once. If you havnt ever had a budget, make this next year the year YOU are going to take control of your finances!

I designate one day a week to take all the reciepts I had collected during the week and record them in my budget. Then I know exactly where my money is going and how much I have left to spend in each catagory. This has been extremely useful in paying down our credit cards. If you need a budget HERE is a great downloadable budget you can start with. Remember it takes a few months to see where all your money is going and where you can cut back on. But once you get rolling, you are on your way to FINANCIAL FREEDOM!!!

I started saving and coupon clipping this August, since then (5 months) I have saved $1,559.00! Just think if I hadnt started using coupons and shopping the sales, we probably would have put that money on a credit card which would have cost us a ton in interest. In the long run not only did we save all that money but we saved the money in interest too!!!

The end of the year is here and the new year is right around the corner. What are you plans for this next year. Lets make this the year to make a difference. Spend less, save more and give more! I encourage all of you to start thinking about your goals for the new year.

Well, I have been M.I.A for awhile now.....oops. With thanksgiving and work booming like never before I have not had the privalege to update my blog! So....I thought I would return to blogging with a BOOM!

Christmas is approacing and our economic status is not looking good. We started a new sermon in church today called the advent conspiracy. I encourage all of you to join with me this Christmas to spend less, stay out of debt and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

Fall is the perfect time to make some easy changes to your home, inside and out. Decorating for Fall doesn't always mean putting up the scarecrow or taping the kids fall leaves to the living room window. Here are some easy, quick and cheap ways to update your home decorating for the colder months ahead.

Inside and outside of your home, take a few minutes to do some decluttering. Every season has its amount of clutter and the summer is no exception! Time to put away the kiddie pool, pack up the beach towels, and put away the flip-flops lining the entryway. Make sure you have designated a place for the kids backpacks and school papers, and set aside a place in the kitchen to store the lunch boxes, water bottles, and the like. Get ready now with a little organization, and your home will show its full potential throughout the season.

Warm up your rooms by bringing in the layers. Throw rugs on the floors, throw blankets on seating, use pillows and layered tablecloths, placemats, and table runners. The layers of fabric add warmth and charm, and you probably have a lot of what you need right in your linen closet. Quilts can cover tables, cloth napkins can be made into pillow covers, and sheets can double as tablecloths.

Add some layers to your windows as well. Cheap muslin from the fabric store can be twisted and wrapped around existing window treatments to add no sew warmth and character. Add a valance, layer mini blinds under your curtains, or add decorative tiebacks. No need for anything fancy and expensive. Try silk flower vines, raffia, bandannas, textured yarn made into tassels or velvet ribbon, depending on the style of your decorating. Remember, for the darker winter months, it's more important than ever to let as much light in as possible. If you haven't already done so, remount your window treatments so that when open, they clear the window. Even a couple of inches of blocked window light can make a huge difference in the feeling of a room. And it's free!

Outside your home, it's time to do a yard cleanup and check your curb appeal. Easy and cheap things to up your autumn season curb appeal? Paint your front door a warm rich color. Deep cranberry, rich chocolate brown, or deep navy all go well with most color schemes, and bring the eye to the entrance of the home for a quart of paint. Add a simple flower planter next to your front door with fall annuals such as mums (for sun) or pansies (for more shady spots). Clean up any weeds or trash, cut the lawn, and trim back overgrown bushes, hedges, or trees. One final outdoor pick me up? Add one window box under your front window, and fill with fall mums. This is an inexpensive project, but it adds more curb appeal than almost anything else you can do. One weekend and your home catches the eye of everyone who passes!

Finally, add some spirit of the season. Perhaps you know a neighbor who has squash overflowing their kitchen? Offer to take some off their hands and display it piled on the porch, or stacked in a wheelbarrow. Tuck a small pot of mums into the stack for a special fall touch. Pick up some candles from the dollar shop or discount store and use them nightly for your family and yourself. Pick up seed pods, pinecones, and acorns on your family nature walks and start a nature jar to display and keep as a memento of your year. Line a serving bowl with a cloth napkin or fabric remnant, and fill with apples and pears from the grocery. Set out small dishes with cinnamon sticks and cloves to sweeten the air with the fall feeling

Here come the Holidays!

Thanksgiving is the ultimate frugal holiday. No expensive presents. No fancy decorating. Just quality time with the family and a delicious home-cooked meal. And the meal does NOT need to be expensive or time-consuming. Thanksgiving is mostly about the side-dishes, and side-dishes are often inexpensive. Even the meat course is not too bad, with high-quality turkeys going for only about two or three bucks a pound.But keep it simple. There's no need to make complicated dishes with expensive ingredients. Just make simple, classic recipes. If you do it with a little finesse, it will be the best Thanksgiving you've ever had.

A Few Days Beforehand

1. Buy a good quality turkey. Time is money, and you don't want to have to spend time brining a bland supermarket bird just so that it is juicy and tasty. If you're in California, I'd recommend a Diestel brand turkey (found at Whole Foods among other places). The turkey will have been treated nicely during its life (no factory farms), and will taste better than a Butterball that has been injected with flavored salt water (so-called self-basting). Go for 1 to 1.5 pounds of turkey per person. Stick with the upper end if you want a lot of leftovers.

Can Be Done Ahead of Time

2. Make a simple fall soup. Try carrot-ginger or butternut squash.

3. Make dessert. Try a pumpkin or apple pie. Or a pumpkin cheesecake. Even just cookies and ice cream would be simple, delicious, and inexpensive.

4. Make cranberry sauce. The canned cranberry jelly is somehow retro and delicious, but a cranberry-orange relish is incredibly easy to make and tastes awesome. Last year we served both the canned and the homemade.On Turkey Day

5. Cook the turkey simply. There's a lot of extra things you could do if you want the perfect turkey (such as brining, e.g. this SF Chronicle recipe), but buying a good turkey and cooking it to the right temperature is probably good enough. Try these high-heat, quick-cooking time recipes from Epicurious or Safeway. Temperature matters, so Thanksgiving is a good opportunity to pick up an "instant-read" thermometer. I've had pretty good luck with the Taylor model.

6. Potatoes are cheap. Mash them. Last year I enjoyed mashed potatoes with sage and white cheddar cheese.

7. Make stuffing (more properly called dressing b/c it's cooked outside the bird). Bittmann has a feature today on simple stuffings. For something more substantial (but more expensive) try cornbread-sausage stuffing.

8. Make another vegetable side dish. Try creamed leeks. Or make something lighter, like green beans with ginger butter.

9. Remove and rest turkey, heat up side dishes, and make gravy. The Epicurious turkey recipe cited above has a simple version. Alton Brown's scientific explanation plus from-scratch version here.

10. Serve and enjoy!

Budgeting has helped us sooo much! We are finally in control of our money and know where every penny is being spent. A few months ago I downloaded a budget tracker and for the first month I recoreded everything we spent. I looked at it at the end of the month and saw where we were spending were we didnt need to be. The next month I put together a budget, cancelled the meberships I didn't need and started taking control. To take control of your money go HERE and download a spreadsheet yourself. The end of the month is comming, start planning a budget now and work on it for the month of October.

Step1

Get current on all of your debt. Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover uses a baby step plan. Before you can start on the baby steps though, you must understand all of your debt.
Step2

Save $1,000 in your Basic Emergency Fund (BEF). If you make less than $20,000 per year, you can reduce this amount to $500. The reason for the basic emergency fund is to have cash flow for any emergencies. If you throw all of your extra money at your debt and your car has a sudden tire blowout, you might not have the money to pay for the new tire and might reach for your credit card. You have got to stop spending on credit immediately and this $1,000 BEF is meant to act as a cushion between you and your credit cards.
Step3

Get out of debt. List your debts from smallest to largest and start hammering away at the smallest debt. Once that is paid off, take your minimum payment from that debt and apply it to the next smallest. Put any extra money that you receive towards your smallest debt. Do not include your mortgage in this step.
Step4

Build up your Fully Funded Emergency Fund (FFEF). Ramsey recommends three to six months of expenses. This isn’t three to six months of income, but of actual expenses. Since you are out of debt except for the mortgage (if you have one), three to six months of expenses is smaller than your income earned during this period.
Step5

Save 15% of your annual income for retirement. Ramsey recommends that you participate in your company’s retirement savings plan up to the match maximum (if your company matches funds) and then look at Roth IRAs for additional retirement savings.
Step6

Plan for your children’s college expenses. Create a separate college savings account for each of your children. If you don’t have children, and don’t plan to, you can skip this step.
Step7

Pay off your mortgage early. Once you have your FFEF and have set aside retirement and college savings, put extra money towards your mortgage to pay it off early. Financial freedom comes when you have no debt and a fully paid for house.
Step8

Build and share your wealth. Once you have no debt, you are able to more quickly build your net worth and subsequently share your wealth with others.

First Year of Marriage

I posted this picture last week. Our Good friend took this picture for us (she's an awesome photographer, http://www.kallimaphotography.com/ for more pics and how to get her to take yours!) But this picture says soo much about our first year. Our one year anniversary was yesterday and we celebrated by packing a picnic and going to the beach! Way to be Frugal! Thank you to my family who sent us gifts in the mail, we put it all towards our "emergency fund". We decided to start Dave Ramseys Program "Total Money makover". The first step is to establish an emergency fund. We are putting every penny to this fund because once we reach $1,000 in it we can move onto the next step which is the debt snowball! Tats when things get really fun as you watch your debt disapear. We are hoping to be completely credit card debt free by next January if not sooner, then we are moving on to the student loans! Once we have that done we can REALLY start having fun and looking for a house!!! Yipee, I can not tell you how exited we are to have complete control over our finances! I hope to keep ya'll posted on our progress!!!

Heres what we have completed so far on our journey:

1. Stopped using credit cards COMPLETLY! (this was huge for the both of us) We cut them up together!

2. Started tracking every penny we use in a budget...wow did we get a shocker!

3. Started using Coupons and only shopping when things are on sale, cut grocery bill in HALF!

4. In two weeks we a moving into a cheaper housing situation, save $400 a month!

5. Read Dave Ramsey's Total money makeover and we are curently in baby step one..emergency fund saving!!

we still have a longs ways to go, but it feels so good to have gotten these steps out of the way! we are on our way to being debt free!!!

I am just finishing up reading the Dave Ramsey Book, "More than Enough". Dave Ramsey is a speaker, radio show host and writer who helps people with financial peace. I encourage any of you who have not read or heard him to go to your library and check out any of his books NOW! I have learned so many valuable lessons from this book. At the end of each chapter, Dave Lists the "keys" to the more than enough mansion (term for financial peace). One that my husband and I were struggling with was:

14. Hope is lost when we belive failure is permanent and we lose perspective.

Latley it seems like we are doing sooo good, we are staying on budget, cutting down on things we dont need, starting a savings account...then something happens. Our car needs repair, our dog needs to go to the vet, some bill comes out of no where that needs a payment now...the list goes on. Its so easy to say this is just to hard, lets just go back to our old ways...but persistance is key. Failure is not permanent, we will not be in this situation forever and we just have to keep looking forward and see the light at the end of the road.

One of the chapters I just read talked about contentment. He says many people have the lack of contentment and how it can cause us to chase happiness. He goes on to explain the "I'll be happy when... syndrome" His son, who is in kindergarten believes he will be happy when he gets to the first grade because he will be in a grade with a number.. But when he finally gets to the first grade he sees these really cool dudes in the sixth grade. "I'll be happy when I get to the sixth grade . When he gets to the sixth grade he wants to go to middle school where he can have a locker. "I'll be happy when I get to middle school." In middle school his friends older brother comes home from highschool. In highschool you can date and drive a car. "I'll be happy when I get to highschool". In highschool that same older brother comes home from college and tells him about it. "The don't even care if you go to class in college."...he thinks "I'll be happy when I get to go to college and dont have to go to class." He finally gets to collge and is living off no doze and spagetti'o's. He thinks "I'll be happy when I get a real job, meet that special someone, get married, have 2.3 kids and a house with a white picked fence...I'll be happy then.." He gets out of college, gets married and with the stresses of family he starts to think "Those diapers need to be changed" he promises himself he'll be happy when the last one is potty trained. In a blink of an eye those kids are teenagers and he thinks "as soon as the last one leaves the house, then I will be happy." They leave and get married and then hes calling them everyday to know when they are going to make him into a grandpa so he can change those diapers again...."I'll be happy then."

makes you think huh? Happiness is like a bully in the schoolyard: He draws a line in the sand and dares you to cross it. When you cross the line he backs up and dares you to cross another line.

If you dont find happiness where you are, you will never find it.

Being frugal for Halloween

Halloween strikes a fearful chord in a frugal mom’s heart. Yet another holiday is here, where mothers can spend lots of money, buying their children costumes that they will wear only once for just a few hours. Isn’t it sad how much money we all waste for such occasions?

Even though you think you have to run out and buy that pricey costume, there are many great and inexpensive alternatives that you can do in lieu of an expensive costume. Here are a few tips for saving cash on all of your Halloween finery, while still looking like you spent a scary amount of cash:

*Think back to your childhood and what costumes used to look like when we were children. Children were often ghosts (made out of sheets), cowboys (wearing a cowboy hat & bandana), and ballerinas (a tutu & leotard). I bet we never thought of our mothers as thrifty, but our moms had a knack for using the resources that they already had. Think of that when coming up with your child’s costume this year. Take a look around at what you already have and make that the costume. Does your daughter love to play dress-up? Use one of her dress-up dresses and add a tiara. Ta-da! Instant princess! Does your son run around with a firefighter hat on? Add a rain jacket and some boots and tell him he is a firefighter this year. There are probably many items in your home that you can use in creative ways, without spending a dime.

*Buy your costumes used at thrift stores or on online auction sites. These costumes can cost half the price or less. Make sure that you start looking sooner rather than later. The good costumes tend to go quickly so call around to the local thrift stores and find out when they will begin putting out their Halloween costumes. Try to make it over to these stores the week that these come out so that you can have the most selection to choose from.

*If you are crafty, try sewing a costume this year. I was not blessed with a crafty gene, but there are many patterns out there that require minimal or no sewing skills at all. Check out the Family Fun website or the Martha Stewart website to come up with some unique costume ideas that are frugal and creative.

*Trading costumes with other families can save you a lot of money. Get a group of friends together and have everyone bring their costumes from the past years, and then allow the trading to begin! Make sure to place your name somewhere on the inside so it can be returned to you when the holiday is over. I have had many great exchanges with moms and this has helped save us a lot of money. Not only that, but we get a cool “new” costume every year.

*If you are buying a costume, try to incorporate items that can be used again. The leotard and tights for a ballerina, for example, could later be used for the child’s dance class. Likewise, you could reuse a black turtleneck and pants throughout the year, when creating your son’s ninja costume. Do your best to reuse the items and you will find that your costume dollars will go a lot further.

Halloween Face Paint
1 tsp. corn starch
1/2 tsp. cold cream
1/2 tsp. water
Food coloring

Small makeup brush Stir starch and cold cream together until they are well blended. Add the water in and stir. Add food coloring and stir. Using the small brush, paint designs on your face, or get someone to help do the painting. Store in an airtight container. To remove, use soap and water.

Every minute the clock ticked last year America's debt increased by $106,830.

According to an study released by Bankrate in 2007:

Americans received 10,000 credit card offers per minute last year or 52 offers per household per year.

12 ways to SLASH your grocery Bill

Here are 12 ways to slash your grocery bills, some may work for you or other may not. But, choose what works for you is the rule of the game.

1. Shop at the cheap stores. The best prices overall are usually found at the discount stores such a Shoppers Food Warehouse, Wal-Mart, Costco, Slater Bros. The only drawback is that you have to buy in bulk. Other places such as Trader Joe's or Aldi have great prices, but their selection is limited.
2. Be Smart About Circulars. Not all items in circulars are on sale. FYI. Manufacturers pay to have their products in a circular because it boost sales up to 500% even if there is not price cut! Be smart!!
3. Avoid store fake-outs. Beware of the end-of-aisle bins, island displays, recipe-related items placement, and "middle-shelf" items. Bargain are often on lower shelves - nice to know!!
4. Be color-blind. Colors can be used to persuade you to choose one brand over another. Ignore colors and check out unit prices so you can compare "apples to apples."
5. Slice, dice and chill it yourself. Items packaged in a convenient way are usually overpriced. Chilled drinks are priced higher.
6. Limit impulse buys. Stick to a well-thought-out shopping list. Decide you won't spend anymore than, say, $10 on things that aren't on your list. This way, you don't feel deprived, but you won't bust your budget either.
7. Try store brands. Try them, and if you and your family like them, then you might be able to save up to 50% on some items.
8. Ask for a bargain. Many stores will match other store's sale prices or coupons as long as you have a circular to prove what a competitor is charging. It is worth it!
9. Ditch unhelpful "helpers." Kids and sometimes spouses want everything else.
10. Don't leave your store card at home. It gets you big discounts on products in the store circular without the need of clipping coupons. Many store allow you to punch in your telephone number if you forget your store card at home.
11. Watch the scanners. The make mistakes too, and you can be over billed!!
12. Get groceries on a click. Usually, grocery-shopping online has a delivery fee, which can be discouraging after all. However, Amazon.com's new service, which features more than 22,000 nonperishable items, gives you FREE ground shipping if you spend more than $25.00. But, you have to buy in bulk and wait 5-7 days for your purchase to arrive. But, you can certainly combine some of your grocery with your holiday shopping this holiday season at Amazon.com!

I was so exited when I got the call last night....my Dave Ramsey "More than Enough" was off of hold and ready for me to check out! Yay! I started reading the first chapter last night and it is amazing! I encourage every single one of you to either buy one this weekend ($10 sale here) or go to your library and see if they have any of his books. (Good luck with that though, I had to wait a month to get mine...). AND on monday I am meeting with a Rep from the Dave Ramsey show to get our money straight and see if he can give us any pointers to get out of debt faster and start saving!!!!

1. Read Dave Ramsey. Read “Your Money or Your Life”.

2. Stop spending! You have to really, truly want to do this. Otherwise, you’ll put yourself on a financial diet and then crash and burn and find yourself justifying why you deserve to spend so much money on a new iPhone when you have a perfectly good phone and $20,000 in debt.

3. Make a budget - Purpose every dollar (including some buffer).

4. Look for expenses coming up in the future and plan for them, so you don’t have to go into debt when they come up

5. Keep trying and don’t give up. Make a commitment, and if you aren’t getting out of debt slowly but surely, revisit that commitment. Change is difficult and it takes drastic change in mindset and behaviors to get out of debt. Anyone can do it - as long as you really want to do it.

6. Eliminate. Take a hard look at what’s truly necessary, and be willing to make compromises. Cable TV, satellite radio, and lunches in the office cafeteria are not necessities. If you have a hard time letting go of these things, run your numbers through a debt calculator twice - once with your current budget, and once with additional money currently paying for niceties. You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference those few extra dollars make.

7. Find your purpose. Is it your children, to start your art business, work from home, free money so that you can give? Finding motivation beyond the money drives our passion. Otherwise our drive is limited. This passion will lead us find out the ‘right’ things to do like stop borrowing, creating budget, etc. Take a look at the things you value deeply and view that framework to judge your actions buy.

8. Change how you think of money. Calculate how much money you make (net) per hour. Do this regardless of whether you are a business owner, salaried or hourly employee. Now apply the time factor to any purchase you make. For example, is that 32″ flat screen television you’re thinking of purchasing worth 10, 20 or 30 hours of your time. Once the dollar amount was removed from the equation and the time factor applied, spending habits can change overnight.

9. Balance transfers. By transferring balances on credit cards, you can consistently pay an average of 4%. One thing to look out for is transfer fees: make sure that the fee isn’t greater than the interest you would save.

10. Debt slavery. Realize that (almost any) debt = slavery. If you don’t mind debt, why get out of it?

I have yet to introduce myself to all of you! I started this blog to keep track of my savings and to keep me on track. I started couponing about three months ago and have really gotten into it! Its saved my husband and I so much money. Over the last three months we have cut back and used the money we are saving to pay down our debt. My goal is to have all of our credit card debt paid off by the end of the year. We also started a savings account to start saving for 20% down on our first house! Exiting!
